How to care for your cape.
All Marta Scarampi capes are designed to be professionally dry cleaned. This guide explains how to clean, refresh and store your cape so it keeps its structure over time — not just its appearance.
Care by material.
All capes follow the same main rule — dry clean only — but each material behaves differently between wears.
Virgin merino wool naturally resists odours and rarely needs cleaning. Let it rest, refresh it, and dry clean only when needed — washing at home risks felting and shrinkage.
How to care
Air after wearing
After wearing, hang the cape on a broad hanger and let it air for a few hours before putting it away.
Dry clean only when needed
For regular use, one or two dry cleans per season is usually enough. Clean sooner only if the cape is visibly marked.
Do not wash at homeRefresh instead of cleaning
Light steaming from a safe distance helps release creases and restore the silhouette without unnecessary cleaning.
Brush and de-pill gently
Use a soft garment brush for surface dust, and a wool comb or stone to lift any pilling. Always work gently, in one direction.
Do
- Air after wearing
- Dry clean once or twice per season
- Steam lightly from a distance
- De-pill gently with a wool comb
- Store in a breathable cotton bag
Don’t
- Do not machine wash
- Do not hand wash
- Do not tumble dry
- Do not store damp
- Do not use plastic covers
Denim is stronger than wool, but a cape is still a constructed garment. Cleaning should preserve the seams, weight and shape — not just the fabric surface.
How to care
Dry clean to preserve construction
Even when the fabric feels sturdy, dry cleaning is the safest option for a finished cape.
Blot small marks
For small marks, blot gently with a clean cloth. Do not scrub, soak or use aggressive stain removers.
Avoid full washing cycles
Machine washing can shift the weight, seams and finishing of the garment.
Do not machine washDo
- Dry clean when needed
- Blot small marks gently
- Air between wears
- Store away from direct sunlight
Don’t
- Do not machine wash
- Do not tumble dry
- Do not bleach
- Do not soak
Microfiber is the most forgiving fabric we use — lighter and more crease-resistant. Even so, the cape is constructed and lined, so dry cleaning remains the safest way to keep its shape.
How to care
Dry clean to protect the shape
Professional cleaning keeps the structure, lining and finish intact.
Air between wears
Microfiber refreshes quickly — air the cape after wearing instead of cleaning it.
Steam, don't iron
Steam lightly from a safe distance to release creases. Avoid direct high heat on synthetic fibres.
Never iron hot directlyDo

Storing your cape.
How you store your cape matters as much as how you clean it. Three things protect it: a broad hanger, a breathable cotton bag, and a cotton cover — never plastic.
A broad, padded hanger
Supports the shoulder line of a structured cape and keeps the fabric from distorting over time.
A breathable cotton bag
Protects the cape from dust while letting the fabric breathe — the best choice for longer storage.
A cotton cover, never plastic
Plastic traps humidity and can mark or felt the fabric. A cotton cover keeps air moving around it.
Frequently asked.
Can I wash my cape at home?
No. Marta Scarampi capes should be professionally dry cleaned only. Do not machine wash, hand wash, soak or tumble dry.
How often should I dry clean it?
Usually once or twice per season, depending on wear. If the cape is worn often as outerwear, air it between wears and dry clean at the end of the season or when visibly marked.
Can I steam my cape?
Yes. Steam lightly from a safe distance to refresh the fabric and release creases. Do not press directly on structured areas or seams.
What should I do with a small stain?
Blot gently and do not rub. Avoid harsh stain removers. For visible marks, take the cape to a professional dry cleaner.
